Iron Butterfly is an American rock band from San Diego, California, best known for their 1968 hit "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", which is considered one of the first heavy metal songs. Formed in 1966, the band's original lineup consisted of Doug Ingle (vocals, organ), Jack Pinney (drums), Greg Willis (bass), and Danny Weis (guitar). The group's first two albums, Heavy (1968) and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1968), are considered among the most influential albums in the history of heavy metal and hard rock.

Some of their standout albums include Heavy (1968), In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1968), Ball (1969), Metamorphosis (1970), and Scorching Beauty (1975). Some of their most popular songs include "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," "Soul Experience," "Easy Rider," "Butterfly Bleu," and "Lonely Boy."

An interesting fact about Iron Butterfly is that the band's signature song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was originally supposed to be called "In the Garden of Eden," but singer Doug Ingle misheard the title as "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and the name stuck.
