About this album

Yumi Matsutoya’s 昨晩お会いしましょう is a landmark early-1980s city pop album, balancing polished pop rock with the warmth and sophistication that made her one of Japan’s most enduring songwriters. Released in 1981, the record helped define the era’s urban pop sensibility, where glossy arrangements, melodic clarity and a more personal lyric style came together. Across its carefully crafted songs, Matsutoya moves between reflective mood, romantic detail and bright, radio-ready hooks, with A Happy New Year and 守ってあげたい standing among the album’s best-known moments. Its mix of kayōkyoku, pop and soul influences made it a key release in her catalogue.
