Yellow Magic Orchestra – Bgm (Music On Vinyl)

Yellow Magic Orchestra's BGM arrived in 1981 as the trio's fourth album, pushing further into synthesizers, drum machines, and rhythmic experimentation at a moment when their approach was helping define electronic pop's possibilities. More atmospheric than the records around it, it sharpens YMO's mix of programmed sequences, shifting tempos, vocals, and soundbites into something cooler, denser, and more inward-looking.

The album is often described as a turning point in the group's catalogue, and it's easy to hear why. YMO successfully fused lyrics and electronic programming without losing the precision that made them so distinctive, while tracks like 1000 Knives and Cue show how melodic fragments, unusual samples, and machine-made rhythms could still feel vivid and human. The handclap in 1000 Knives went on to become a widely reused sample in 1980s and early-1990s hip-hop and electronic music, a small detail that says plenty about the record's reach.

This Music On Vinyl edition brings BGM back into print in a straightforward, collector-friendly form. For anyone tracing the line from early technopop to later electronic and sample-based music, this is one of YMO's key records: not background music at all, but a tense, inventive album that keeps revealing new details.
