Released in 1979, it marked a major step forward for the Swindon band, blending wiry guitars, nervous rhythms and Andy Partridge’s sharply observed writing into one of late-’70s British pop’s most distinctive statements. ‘Making Plans for Nigel’ became its defining song and a breakthrough single, while the album as a whole helped establish XTC as inventive songwriters who could make new wave feel both eccentric and fully accessible.
