With his guitar in tow, folk singer Woody Guthrie became the voice of the exploited, the displaced and the oppressed during the Great Depression in the United States.
He embodied the spirit of those who lost everything during the political and economic crisis of the 1930s and made a lasting contribution to the development of political song with his powerful protest songs - it is no coincidence that Bob Dylan dedicated one of his songs to the forefather of folk, and even today Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" is still part of the standard repertoire of every good primary school songbook as the unofficial national anthem of the USA.
