About this album

Karajan’s Mozart Requiem is a commanding late-20th-century reading of one of classical music’s most enduring masterpieces. Recorded in 1976 with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Singverein and soloists Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Agnes Baltsa, Werner Krenn and José van Dam, it brings operatic power and choral solemnity to Mozart’s final and most famous sacred work. Herbert von Karajan’s smooth orchestral control and disciplined choral forces shape a performance that is both noble and intensely dramatic, helping keep the Requiem at the centre of the concert repertory and on record for new generations of listeners.
