Willie Nelson's Stardust was a genuinely surprising move when it arrived in 1978: at the height of outlaw country, Nelson turned to the Great American Songbook and ended up making the best-selling album of his career. Produced by Booker T. Jones, it gathers ten pre-rock standards and proves just how naturally Nelson could move between country, pop, jazz and folk without losing his unmistakable voice.

What makes the album last is its understatement. Rather than treating these songs as museum pieces, Nelson and his band play them with an easy, conversational grace, letting his phrasing and guitar do the emotional heavy lifting. Booker T. Jones keeps the arrangements beautifully restrained, so songs like Georgia on My Mind, Blue Skies and the title track feel intimate rather than showy. Stardust also carried real staying power. Nelson's version of Georgia on My Mind won the 1979 Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, two songs became country-chart hits, and the album remained on the Billboard album chart for a decade. More than a successful detour, it became one of the clearest demonstrations of Nelson's gifts as an interpreter, and a cornerstone of his catalogue.
