Saul Williams – Leap Life (2xLP)

Saul Williams' Leap Life is his first solo album in more than a decade, a return that also reunites him with Big Dada, the label that launched his solo career. Named after his leap-year birthday, the record was sequenced by Carlos Niño as a continuous front-to-back listen rather than a set of isolated tracks, which suits music built around spoken word, atmosphere and accumulation.

What makes this release especially interesting is how Williams pushes further into electronic and ambient territory without leaving behind the poetic intensity that has defined his work for nearly three decades. The source material points to rich sound design shaped from nature recordings and environmental textures, while Williams draws on Black church traditions, Fela Kuti, and South African electronic music. He also takes a greater role as producer here, making the album feel less like a standard rap or spoken-word set and more like a deliberately immersive composition.

The guest list is substantial but purposeful: Kamasi Washington, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Moor Mother, Gonjasufi, Surya Botofasina, and Robert Del Naja are all part of the picture, with Anisia Uzeyman appearing on Une Photographie. Tracks such as Conspiracy and Robot Slave suggest that even at its most exploratory, Leap Life stays connected to rhythm, resistance and voice. For listeners who have followed Williams from Amethyst Rock Star onward, this feels like a genuine new chapter rather than a nostalgic return.
