Highwayman is a landmark outlaw-country collaboration that brought Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson together as a genuine supergroup. Released in 1985, the album was led by the title song, a No. 1 country hit that turned the four singers into a single, mythic voice and became one of the era’s defining country singles. Produced by Chips Moman, the record balances road-weary balladry, dusty humour and hard-earned reflection, drawing on each artist’s distinct strengths without smoothing them into the same mould. Its success helped cement the Highwaymen as country icons beyond their solo careers.
