Switched-On Bach is a landmark electronic reimagining of Johann Sebastian Bach that helped bring synthesiser music into the mainstream. Created by Walter Carlos and released in 1968, it used the Moog synthesiser to transform Baroque counterpoint into something startlingly new, yet still recognisably Bach. The album became both a crossover success and a critical talking point, showing that electronic instruments could handle classical repertory with precision, wit and colour. Its unexpected popularity helped open the door for synthesiser-led music in both pop and serious experimental circles, making it one of the most influential debut statements in modern electronic music.
