Various Artists – HEART OF GOLD - THE SONGS OF NEIL YOUNG VOL 1 (White Vinyl)

Various Artists' Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Vol. 1 is a 2025 tribute set that turns Neil Young's songbook into a broad survey of voices across folk, rock and Americana. That range matters because Young's writing has always travelled well: this album moves from the intimacy of "Needle and the Damage Done" to the open-road warmth of "Harvest" and the enduring pull of "Heart of Gold," the title song from Young's 1972 Harvest, his first number-one album.

Rather than sticking to one style, Volume I leans into contrast. Fiona Apple takes on "Heart of Gold," while Eddie Vedder, Courtney Barnett, Sharon Van Etten, Mumford & Sons, Stephen Marley, Brandi Carlile, Steve Earle and the Lumineers all approach Young from their own angles. The Doobie Brothers team with Allison Russell on "Comes a Time," which says a lot about the idea here: these are recognisable artists using Young's songs as material sturdy enough to survive very different phrasing, tone and arrangement.

There's also a clear sense of purpose behind the release. Issued by Cinema Music Group and Killphonic Records, the album benefits the Bridge School in Hillsborough, California, the organisation co-founded by Pegi Young to support children with severe speech and physical impairments. On vinyl, this edition keeps things simple: a single LP on White Vinyl, with an insert included.
