Various Artists – Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young (Volume 3: Into the Black, (Gold Vinyl)

Various Artists' Heart Of Gold: The Songs Of Neil Young Vol. 3 - Into The Black is the third entry in a tribute series devoted to Neil Young’s songwriting, following the project’s 2025 launch and channeling proceeds to The Bridge School, the nonprofit founded by Neil and Pegi Young. That charitable frame matters here: more than a loose covers set, this volume gathers donated recordings from a wide spread of indie and alternative artists, each approaching Young’s catalogue with enough personality to make the material feel lived-in rather than merely revered.

The appeal is in the range. This set moves between acoustic intimacy and louder, full-band reinvention, with Briston Maroney opening on “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue),” King Princess recasting “Helpless,” and Modest Mouse with Califone taking on “Barstool Blues.” Elsewhere, LP, Ben Gibbard, MJ Lenderman, Cold War Kids, Kurt Vile and The Violators, Devendra Banhart and others show how adaptable Young’s songs remain across different generations and scenes.

Because the compilation balances familiar titles with less overexposed choices, it works as both a tribute and a fresh way into Young’s writing. The sequencing keeps his acoustic and electric sides in conversation, and the closing return to “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” underlines that tension neatly. For anyone drawn to tribute albums that feel curated rather than dutiful, this is an easy one to recommend.
