  • Universe was a Welsh rock band formed in the late 1960s that combined progressive and bluesy musical elements with a powerful sound. Guitarist Steve Finn, bassist John Healen and drummer Rob Reynolds formed the core of the band, which first performed under the name Deep Blue Centre, then Spoonfull, and rehearsed a program that included covers and original compositions influenced by bands such as Cream, John Mayall and Jimi Hendrix.

In 1970 they became Universe, a name that reflected the great ambition of their evolving music. Universe became known for their outstanding live performances, playing countless gigs across Wales and far beyond. They shared the stage with artists such as Jethro Tull, Yes and Graham Bond and completed a character-building but exhausting tour of Hamburg and Norway.

The constant touring refined their sound and inspired them to write original compositions such as "Twilight Winter" and "A Woman's Shape" In 1971, the band recorded an album and a single in Norway, both self-titled; these recordings later became coveted finds among collectors. Although Universe's time was brief, their music remains as a fascinating chapter in the Welsh underground rock scene. With Steve Finn's ongoing solo work and the reissue of their recordings, Universe occupy a unique place in early 70s rock history.
