The Unforgettable Fire marked U2’s first great artistic leap, trading the raw attack of their early records for a more spacious, searching sound. Released in 1984 and produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, it pushed the band towards atmosphere, ambiguity and emotional scale without losing their sense of urgency. The single Pride (In the Name of Love) became one of U2’s signature songs, while Bad showed how far they could stretch a simple melody into something transcendent. Widely regarded as the album that opened the path to The Joshua Tree, it remains a key statement in the band’s rise from post-punk hopefuls to global rock act.
