About this album
A Beard Of Stars / Unicorn captures Tyrannosaurus Rex at a pivotal moment, refining their mystical folk-rock into something sharper, stranger and more electrified. Issued in 1972, this pairing draws from the period when Marc Bolan was pushing beyond the duo’s earlier acoustic mysticism toward the more driving sound that would soon feed into T. Rex. The songs mix pastoral imagery, handmade percussion, electric textures and melodic immediacy, with highlights such as ‘By The Light Of The Magical Moon’, ‘A Beard Of Stars’ and ‘Elemental Child’ showing how Bolan’s songwriting was becoming both more direct and more forceful. It is a key document of that transition.
