    First Taste finds Ty Segall turning his garage-rock instincts into one of his most playful and unpredictable albums. Released in 2019, it balances serrated riffs, elastic grooves and a sharper sense of arrangement than much of his earlier work, while still sounding unmistakably raw and immediate. Segall wrote, performed and produced the record himself, shaping a set that moves from bruising rockers to off-kilter psych-pop and weirdly tender moments. Songs such as Taste, Radio and Self Esteem show his knack for hooks without sanding off the abrasion, making the album a vivid snapshot of one of modern rock’s most prolific voices.
