Replicas is the breakthrough album where Gary Numan and Tubeway Army fused post-punk bite with cold, mechanical electronics. Released in 1979, it followed the unexpected success of Are 'Friends' Electric? and pushed Numan from cult curiosity to chart-topping futurist. Built on stark synthesizers, rigid rhythms and detached vocals, the album helped define synth-pop and new wave at the point where rock was beginning to absorb electronic textures. Songs such as Down in the Park and the title track became touchstones of the era, and the record’s influence can be heard across later electronic and alternative music.
