About this album
Swordfishtrombones is the album that transformed Tom Waits from late-night barroom balladeer into one of rock’s most singular experimental voices. Released in 1983, it abandoned his earlier piano-led style for clattering percussion, deconstructed arrangements and surreal, street-level storytelling. The record’s off-kilter sound and stark imagery helped set the course for the rest of his career, influencing generations of alternative and avant-garde artists. Songs such as 16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought-Six, Johnsburg, Illinois and Frank’s Wild Years show how Waits turned eccentric detail, blues fragments and theatrical instincts into a bleakly funny, deeply human vision.
