Small Change is an LP by Tom Waits from 1976 released on the Asylum Records label.
About this album
Small Change sharpens Tom Waits’s early 1970s sound into a mordant, late-night song cycle. Arriving in 1976, the album deepened his blend of bar-room jazz, blues, ragged piano and beatnik storytelling, with songs such as Step Right Up, The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me) and Tom Traubert’s Blues showing his gift for turning misfits and hangovers into vivid American scenes. Produced by Bones Howe, it is one of the records that cemented Waits’s reputation as a singular writer and performer, moving his work further from singer-songwriter convention towards a darker, more theatrical voice.
