About this album
Rain Dogs is widely regarded as Tom Waits at his most inventive and uncompromising. Released in 1985, it pushed his outsider songwriting into a dense world of junkyard blues, carnival cabaret and fractured jazz, with arrangements that sound both ragged and meticulously plotted. The album was co-produced by Waits and marked a key turn in his career away from barroom narrative towards surreal urban collage. Songs such as Jockey Full of Bourbon, Tango Till They’re Sore and Downtown Train helped define his late-1980s reputation, while Rain Dogs itself became a touchstone for alternative rock and experimental songwriting.
