Tom Verlaine – Live in NYC 1996-2006 (Sea Blue Vinyl, RSD BF 2026)

Tom Verlaine’s Live NYC 96-06 gathers previously unreleased recordings from four New York concerts taped between 1996 and 2006, turning a decade of late-period performances into a vivid portrait of the guitarist in his natural setting. More than a live retrospective, it shows how Verlaine’s self-directed path beyond Television kept drawing on free-jazz openness, a famously clear, effects-light guitar tone, and solos that unfold slowly before taking sharp, surprising turns.

The set reaches across a broad stretch of his solo catalogue, from Tom Verlaine and Words from the Front through The Wonder, Flash Light, Around, and Songs and Other Things. Just as importantly, it includes three songs new to his discography, which makes this more than a document of familiar material. Tracks such as “All Weirded Out” and “Words from the Front” underline how naturally his writing and improvising fit together onstage, with the band giving his lines room to breathe rather than pinning them down.

There is real archival care behind the release too. Verlaine’s longtime engineer and bandmate Patrick Derivaz compiled and mastered the album, while David Fricke contributes liner notes and Jutta Koether adds artwork. For listeners who know Verlaine mainly through Television, this is a strong reminder that his live solo work could be just as searching, wiry, and unpredictable.
