Long After Dark is a taut, hook-driven turning point in Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ catalogue, balancing arena-sized pop instincts with the band’s rootsy rock & roll bite. Released in 1982, the album was produced by Jimmy Iovine and became the group’s first without founding bassist Ron Blair, with Howie Epstein stepping in on bass. Its best-known single, You Got Lucky, gave the band one of its biggest hits and a vivid MTV-era identity, while songs such as Change of Heart and Straight Into Darkness underline Petty’s gift for hard-edged melody and plainspoken emotional tension. The result is one of the band’s most durable early-’80s statements.
