    Underground is one of Thelonious Monk’s most striking late-period albums, balancing his angular humour with some of his most memorable writing. Released in 1968, it was his final studio album for Columbia and won the Grammy Award for Best Album Cover for its wartime-themed artwork. Alongside Monk originals such as “Ugly Beauty” and “Green Chimneys”, the set also revisits “In Walked Bud”, showing how he could make familiar material sound entirely his own. Rooted in bop yet unmistakably personal, the album captures Monk’s gift for turning unexpected harmonies and rhythmic turns into enduring jazz statements.
