The Who's Tommy arrived in May 1969 at a crucial moment for the band, turning them from a hit-driven singles act into a serious albums band. Pete Townshend's ambitious rock opera follows the story of Tommy Walker, the "deaf, dumb and blind" boy at its centre, and its darker themes were controversial enough to be banned by the BBC and some U.S. radio stations. The risk paid off: the album reached No. 4 on the Billboard chart, sold more than 20 million copies, and became the breakthrough that pushed The Who to international superstardom.

What still makes Tommy compelling is how firmly The Who keep the story tied to the force of the band itself. Townshend's long-form narrative opened up new possibilities for rock, but the record never loses its punch, balancing pop hooks, harmonies and hard-charging instrumentation with theatrical sweep. "Pinball Wizard," "I'm Free" and the long instrumental "Underture" show how the album moves between concise songs and larger recurring motifs without sounding like a mere stage exercise.

It also marked a clear shift from the style of The Who Sell Out, giving Townshend room to prove he could write on a much larger scale while still delivering songs that stuck. Later adapted into Ken Russell's 1975 film, Tommy remains one of the records that defined how far a rock album's narrative could stretch.
