  • By the end of the Sixties, The Who had long since shed their reputation: they were considered one of the greatest live bands in the world. So it's no surprise that half a century later, this album lands at # 1 on the best live albums of all time: The Who - Live At Leeds

The New York Times even then called the concert, recorded in February 1970 on Leeds' college campus, "the best live rock album ever." The song selection alone: The Who even played a surprising track like Young Man Blues, composed by jazz veteran Mose Allison, in the northern English city. They also performed a cover of Sonny Boy Williamson's Eyesight To The Blind, interspersed between early hits like I Can't Explain and Happy Jack and an extended version of the then-current song Tommy. The closing medley - including My Generation and Magic Bus - acted as a perfect finale for Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon.

"For the recording, we hardly added any new tracks afterwards," Daltrey once said. "In fact, if anything, we had to take things away ... especially the audience, because otherwise you wouldn't have heard enough of the music." That says it all, really.
