The Who - Live at Leeds captures the band at the University of Leeds in February 1970, in the brief window after Tommy and before Who's Next. Released that same year while the group worked on new material, it quickly stood apart from the era's tidier live albums: a lean original six-track set that felt closer to a bootleg document than a prestige package, and all the more convincing for it.

What makes the record endure is how clearly it shows the classic lineup operating in real time. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon tear through three toughened-up covers and three Who originals with a mix of control and near-chaos. Young Man Blues and Summertime Blues underline the band's maximum-R&B roots, while the long, surging versions of My Generation and Magic Bus show how far they could stretch familiar material onstage.
