Pete Townshend’s growing command of melody and structure is evident throughout, from the punchy singles to the suite-like “A Quick One While He’s Away”, often seen as a precursor to the rock opera form. With humour, bite and momentum, it helped establish The Who as one of the most inventive British rock bands of the 1960s.
