The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat (Abbey Road Half Speed Master)

The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat is the band’s second album, released in 1968, and it still sounds like a deliberate act of abrasion. Stripped of the buffers around the debut, it was recorded without Nico or Andy Warhol and captures the core quartet of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker at their rawest. That matters historically as much as sonically: this is the last Velvet Underground album with Cale, and the black-on-black sleeve was designed by Factory figure Billy Name.

The record runs on a very specific kind of intensity. The title track pushes a primitive rock’n’roll frame into distortion, The Gift turns darkly comic spoken narrative into avant-rock, and Sister Ray closes the album with a one-take, two-chord sprawl that has become central to the group’s reputation. Even the more direct songs feel wired tight, with Reed’s writing sounding simpler on the surface than the noise around it suggests.

This edition’s half-speed mastering at Abbey Road by Miles Showell is a later pressing detail, but the real draw is the album itself: a tough, confrontational snapshot of the Velvets before their next left turn. If the debut opened a door, White Light/White Heat kicked it off its hinges.
