The Velvet Underground is a strikingly intimate and uncompromising album that deepened the band’s influence beyond their avant-garde beginnings. Released in 1969, it finds Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker moving towards softer dynamics, reflective songwriting and stark psychological detail, while still retaining the group’s jagged edge. Songs such as Pale Blue Eyes and Candy Says helped define a more confessional, delicately melodic strain of underground rock, and the album’s uneasy mix of beauty and restraint made it a key bridge between psychedelic experimentation and the emerging singer-songwriter sensibility. It is widely regarded as one of the band’s most important records.
