  • The Streets' Original Pirate Material arrived in 2002 as Mike Skinner's debut and quickly stood apart from both UK garage compilations and conventional rap records. Built from a sharp mix of garage, hip-hop and electronic production, it gave everyday British life a new voice: witty, conversational, and full of small details that made songs about nights out, money, boredom and bravado feel unusually vivid. Its crossover appeal also helped it reach far beyond garage's core audience.

What still makes the album work is Skinner's balance of plainspoken storytelling and inventive beats. Singles such as Has It Come to This? and Let's Push Things Forward introduced his half-rapped, half-sung delivery, while tracks like Weak Become Heroes showed how reflective and melodic his writing could be without losing its street-level perspective. The result is a debut that feels rooted in a specific scene but never boxed in by it.

The record's reputation was established early. It reached number 12 on the UK Albums Chart in 2002, then climbed to number 10 in 2004 after A Grand Don't Come for Free expanded Skinner's audience. NME later placed it at number 46 in its 100 Best Albums of All Time list, a sign of how quickly this debut moved from surprise success to modern British staple. This edition brings that first Streets album back on a fittingly bold green vinyl pressing.
