The Streets' Original Pirate Material arrived in 2002 as Mike Skinner's debut and quickly stood apart from both UK garage compilations and conventional rap records. Built from a sharp mix of garage, hip-hop and electronic production, it gave everyday British life a new voice: witty, conversational, and full of small details that made songs about nights out, money, boredom and bravado feel unusually vivid. What still makes the album work is Skinner's balance of plainspoken storytelling and inventive beats.
