Channel One Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, holds a special place in the history of reggae. From 1972 to 1980, it was the go-to destination for producers, musicians, and singers. The studio’s founding by the sons of the Hookim family—who manufactured slot machines in addition to jukeboxes—was preceded by a crackdown on gambling. From then on, they preferred to record records that could be used to feed the music machines, among other things. The label expanded as far as New York, while the political and social situation in Jamaica grew increasingly tense toward the end of the 1970s. Violence reigned in the streets of Kingston at night. Producer Niney The Observer (who worked with Dennis Brown and Yellowman) capitalized on some artists’ fear of not making it home safely after late sessions and had them play all night long. This resulted in many rhythms, some of which can be heard for the first time on "100 Tons Of Dub." One hundred tons of dub as the legacy of a legendary studio.
