Meat Is Murder sharpened The Smiths’ wit and urgency into a more forceful political and emotional statement. Issued in 1985, the band’s second album widened their range beyond debut melancholy, with Johnny Marr’s chiming guitars and Morrissey’s biting lyricism tackling school discipline, class tension, animal rights and romantic frustration in equal measure. Tracks such as The Headmaster Ritual, Rusholme Ruffians and the title song became central to the group’s reputation for mixing melody with provocation. The record helped define British indie rock in the mid-1980s and remains one of The Smiths’ most significant and enduring albums.
