The Residents – Commercial Album

The Residents' Commercial Album arrived in 1980 with one of the group's sharpest ideas: 40 songs trimmed to roughly a minute each, built on the notion that the essence of a three-minute pop song could be compressed into a commercial-sized burst. That concept makes this one of the clearest statements of the Residents' long-running satire of American mass culture, but it is also unusually melodic by their standards, full of clipped hooks, oddball refrains and deadpan pop detours.
What keeps the record compelling is how much variety the group packs into that strict format. Even in miniature, these pieces jump between synthetic pop, skewed balladry and nervy experimental collage, with tracks like Easter Woman, Perfect Love and Amber showing just how catchy the Residents could be without ever sounding straightforward. The source material also points to guest appearances from Fred Frith, Chris Cutler and XTC's Andy Partridge, which helps explain the album's wiry, unpredictable detail.
This 2023 pREServed Edition matters because it returns the album from the original tapes and frames it properly as more than a cult curio. The remaster was produced with the Residents and the Cryptic Corporation, and this expanded edition adds the COMS 1-3 RDX Suite drawn from the album's multi-track tapes. With rare imagery and substantial new annotation, it captures an album that turned pop form into a private, wonderfully strange logic of its own.
