Sunshine On Leith is the Proclaimers’ breakthrough album, turning their sharp harmonies and bluntly honest songwriting into one of the most distinctive British records of the late 1980s. Issued in 1988, it expanded the impact of their debut by pairing folk-rock drive with melodies built for singalongs, most famously on “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” and the title track. The album’s mix of humour, politics and affection for everyday life gave it lasting appeal, while its biggest songs helped the Scottish duo reach a far wider audience and become enduring favourites on both radio and stage.
