About this album
Outlandos d'Amour is the breakthrough that set The Police apart from punk contemporaries and helped define late-70s new wave. Issued in 1978, the album combines Sting's sharp songwriting, Andy Summers' guitar colour and Stewart Copeland's restless drumming into a taut, reggae-tinged rock sound that felt immediate and distinctive. Recorded with minimal frills and driven by the urgency of songs such as Roxanne, Can't Stand Losing You and So Lonely, it turned the trio into international contenders. The album's mix of pop instinct, punk energy and dub-informed rhythm became a template for much of their later success.
