Free Jazz (A Collective Improvisation) is an LP by The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet released on the Atlantic label.
About this album
Free Jazz is Ornette Coleman’s landmark 1961 statement, and one of the most important recordings in modern jazz. Recorded as a continuous double-quartet improvisation, it took Coleman’s ideas about collective freedom further than almost anyone had heard before, creating a charged, spacious dialogue between eight musicians. The album gave its name to the emerging style and became a touchstone for later avant-garde jazz, admired for its ambition as much as its raw energy. Bold, uncompromising and historically pivotal, it remains one of the clearest declarations of jazz as open-ended invention.
