All Four One is the album that turned The Motels into new wave hitmakers. Released in 1982, it sharpened the Los Angeles band’s blend of pop-rock, cool synth textures and Martha Davis’s distinctive vocals into a more direct, radio-ready sound. The record is best known for Only the Lonely, their breakthrough single and a US Top 10 hit, but it also shows the group balancing brittle emotion with sharp hooks on songs such as Mission of Mercy and Take the L. Widely regarded as their strongest commercial statement, the album helped define early-80s West Coast pop-rock with a darker edge.
