    Miles Smiles is a landmark post-bop album from Miles Davis’ second great quintet, showing how far modern jazz could stretch without losing swing or precision. Recorded in 1967 and released the same year, it pairs Davis with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams in a line-up famed for its telepathic interaction and rhythmic daring. The set includes enduring pieces such as Footprints and Freedom Jazz Dance, with Hancock’s comping and Williams’ elastic drumming helping push the music beyond hard bop into something more open, angular and influential. Widely regarded as one of Davis’ key 1960s records, it helped define the post-bop era.
