About this album
Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet is a hard bop landmark that shows the First Great Quintet at full command. Recorded in 1956 and released in 1957, it captured Miles Davis with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones in a series of focused, hard-swinging sessions that became a template for modern jazz small-group interplay. Its blend of cool poise, blues feeling and harmonic daring is especially clear on standards such as My Funny Valentine alongside tougher material like Airegin and Blues By Five. As part of Prestige's celebrated 'Relaxin', Steamin', Workin' and Cookin'' sessions, the album helped define Davis' mid-1950s breakthrough.
