The Marías – Submarine (Clear Vinyl)

The Marías' Submarine is the Los Angeles band's second album, released in 2024, and it turns inward rather than outward. Built around themes of solitude, exploration and heartbreak, it arrived three years after the Grammy-nominated Cinema and finds María Zardoya and Josh Conway pushing the group's dreamy psych-pop into a more emotionally submerged space.

The core appeal is still unmistakably The Marías: Zardoya's smoke-soft vocals, Conway's sleek production, Jesse Perlman's hypnotic guitar lines and Edward James' keys, all shaped into a hazy blend of jazz percussion, psychedelia, funk and lounge-pop. The songs use an underwater mood without losing definition, with the bilingual set moving between English and Spanish and drawing particular attention to singles including Run Your Mouth, If Only and No One Noticed.

What makes Submarine especially satisfying is how clearly it extends the band's world while changing its emotional temperature. Where the debut established their cinematic style, this follow-up leans into loneliness, blurred perception and intimate reflection, giving their velvety sound a more vulnerable centre.
