Vocalese is The Manhattan Transfer’s most ambitious statement, transforming classic jazz language into tightly arranged, lyric-driven vocal performance. Released in 1985, the album was built on the art of vocalese: adding lyrics to existing jazz solos and lines, then performing them with dazzling precision and swing. Drawing on material associated with bebop masters such as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown, the record showcases the group’s blend of pop accessibility, harmonic sophistication and immaculate ensemble control. Widely admired as one of their landmark albums, it underlined their unique role in bringing jazz-rooted vocal craftsmanship to a broader audience.
