The Go-Betweens – Fountains of Youth (Live at the Town & Country Club, London - 10th May 1987) (2xLP)

The Go-Betweens' Fountains of Youth - Live at the Town and Country Club captures the band in London in May 1987, just before Tallulah arrived and at a point when songs for 16 Lovers Lane were already taking shape. More than a routine concert document, this was professionally recorded on 24-track, 2-inch analogue tape - by Robert Forster's account, almost certainly the only Go-Betweens show preserved that way - which gives the album a rare sense of occasion as well as unusual clarity.

That occasion clearly shaped the performance. Instead of treating the night as a greatest-hits run-through, the band used the chance to build a more adventurous four-side set, mixing key songs with deeper selections and letting their dual-songwriter identity come through in full. Grant McLennan's melodic, open-hearted writing and Robert Forster's sharper, darker instincts have always been central to the Go-Betweens, and this set shows how naturally those voices could coexist on stage.

It also sits neatly inside the group's much-loved Beggars Banquet period, the so-called London years that produced Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express, Tallulah, and eventually 16 Lovers Lane. With performances of songs such as "Bye Bye Pride," "Right Here," and "Karen," Fountains of Youth works both as a vivid live snapshot and as evidence of a band refining its songwriting in real time. This edition also matters historically: the album was remastered in 2019 for Domino's G Stands for Go-Betweens Anthology and is available on standalone vinyl for the first time in over 30 years.
