The Go-Betweens – 16 Lovers Lane

The Go-Betweens' 16 Lovers Lane arrived in 1988 as the Australian group's sixth album, written around the end of their London years and recorded after the band returned to Sydney. That push-and-pull is part of what gives the record its character: Robert Forster called it the meeting of "London melancholy and Sydney sunshine," and the album turns that contrast into ten sharply observed love songs rather than a loose set of indie-pop sketches.

It also holds a special place in the band's catalogue. Often described as The Go-Betweens' finest album, it balances Grant McLennan's melodic, open-hearted writing with Forster's cooler, darker romanticism, helped by a line-up that still included Amanda Brown's distinctive presence and, for this era, John Willsteed on bass and guitar. The result is direct but never simplistic, with songs like "Streets of Your Town," "Love Goes On!" and "Was There Anything I Could Do?" showing how effortlessly the band could make emotional ambiguity sound inviting.

The album's reputation has only grown: it was included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and its 2026 vinyl return uses the 2019 remaster first prepared for Domino's G Stands For Go-Betweens anthology. Just as importantly for collectors, this standalone LP marks the first individual vinyl issue of 16 Lovers Lane since 1988, giving one of the great late-'80s guitar-pop records a welcome life of its own again.
