Panorama is a cool, sharply drawn third album from The Cars, and it deepened the band’s New Wave formula rather than simply repeating their breakthrough. Issued in 1980, it pairs Ric Ocasek’s clipped songwriting with glossy synthesiser lines, angular guitars and the group’s easy command of pop structure. Recorded with producer Roy Thomas Baker, the album leans into a sterner, more experimental feel while still delivering the taut hooks that made The Cars one of the era’s defining crossover bands. Its best-known songs, including Touch and Go and Gimme Some Slack, helped show how polished radio rock could still sound detached, stylish and slightly unsettling.
