Mr. Tambourine Man is the breakthrough that helped define folk rock on the pop charts. The Byrds fused Bob Dylan’s songwriting with chiming 12-string guitar, tight harmonies and a clean, radio-ready drive that set a template for countless bands after them. Led by the hit title track and strong originals such as I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better, the 1965 release showed how folk material could be reworked with electric energy without losing lyrical bite. Produced by Terry Melcher, it became a landmark of the 1960s West Coast sound and one of the most influential debuts of its era.
