The Fine Art of Surfacing sharpened the Boomtown Rats’ New Wave attack into one of their strongest statements. Issued in 1979, the album pushed the Dublin band beyond punky hostility and into sharper, more varied songwriting, with Bob Geldof’s acidic lyricism at the centre. Its biggest calling card is ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’, the stark, piano-led single that became a major international hit and remains the group’s defining song. Elsewhere, the record mixes taut rock, satire and uneasy humour, showing a band capable of turning social frustration into memorable, radio-ready hooks without losing its edge.
