Rubber Factory is a raw, breakthrough statement from The Black Keys, sharpening their stripped-back garage-blues sound into something tougher and more distinctive. The Akron duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney recorded the album in a converted rubber factory, a setting that suited its grit and urgency, and the record helped establish their reputation beyond the underground. Built on skeletal drums, ragged guitar and Auerbach’s wiry vocals, it balances swagger with melancholy on songs such as 10 A.M. Automatic and The Lengths. Widely regarded as one of their essential early releases, it paved the way for their later mainstream success.
