  • The Beatles' The Beatles' Second Album arrived in April 1964 as Capitol's first Beatles LP assembled specifically for the American market, right as Beatlemania was exploding in the US after the group's Ed Sullivan appearance. Its running order says a lot about that moment: instead of mirroring a UK release, it leans hard into the Beatles' tougher R&B side, mixing storming covers with key early singles and B-sides.

That makes this one of the punchiest records in the early Beatles catalogue. Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven, the Little Richard favourite Long Tall Sally, and the huge US hit She Loves You give the album a breathless pace, while songs like You Can't Do That add extra bite. AllMusic has argued that, whatever its unusual origin, it stands among the purest rock & roll statements in the group's discography, which feels fair when you hear how direct and full of momentum these performances are.

This 2024 mono edition also matters for collectors because it returns to the original US mono master for the first time on vinyl since the 1980s, as part of the 60th-anniversary campaign for the Beatles' 1964 US albums. The new cut was made fully analog by Kevin Reeves at East Iris Studios, with reference to original first pressings, and it comes with faithfully replicated artwork plus a new Bruce Spizer essay insert.
