The Barney Kessel Quartet – Workin' Out (VG+/VG+) – LP, US 1961

Workin' Out is an LP by The Barney Kessel Quartet from 1961 released on the Contemporary Records label.

About this album

Workin' Out is a crisp, melodic showcase for Barney Kessel’s guitar, balancing relaxed swing with tasteful harmonic colour. Issued in 1961, the album finds Kessel working in quartet form, giving his lines room to breathe while keeping the music tightly focused and rhythmically buoyant. The set moves fluidly through standards and jazz pieces, including ‘Summertime’ and ‘My Funny Valentine’, where Kessel’s touch and phrasing bring warmth without excess. As one of the notable early-1960s statements from a guitarist already established as a leading modern jazz voice, it reflects the elegance and confidence that made him so highly regarded.
