The Band is a landmark roots-rock statement that helped define American album craft at the end of the 1960s. Issued in 1969, their self-titled second album sharpened the group’s blend of folk, rock, country and gospel into something leaner and more vivid, with Robbie Robertson’s writing and the band’s close-knit playing giving each song a distinctive character. Songs such as The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up On Cripple Creek and King Harvest (Has Surely Come) became enduring touchstones, while the record’s plainspoken storytelling and period detail made it one of the era’s most influential and widely admired releases.
